    I felt myself stuck on a song the last few weeks and listening to other songs to have an idea of where to go. I think that wasn't the right decision. The song can develop naturally if I just trust where it's going. I can now go back to the first few drafts and see where it naturally goes from there, rather than force an outcome from analyzing it too much.

      Sometimes it helps to listen to other tracks and somethings, especially if the idea is strong and developed, it's better to move forward undistracted!

    I had a few years where an internet radio station would play my stuff weekly. I learned the benefit of this was recording live sets for fresh radio tracks set me onto a happy go lucky mind because I wasn't concerned with aiming my work at future album recordings. I was carefree to just play and record knowing only a few people would listen to the radio sets.

      That's awesome! Are there still internet radio stations? I certainly miss having a person curate my music-listening experience. It's great to have every song ever at my fingertips at all times. But trying to decide what to listen to all the time is exhausting. Sometimes I don't feel like "DJing" for myself! Recording live sets is a great way to get in the moment and have fun. I usually do it too. I find it either helps me move the song along or cements it into its current state. Referring to minute 12 - It's not the greatness/quantity/depth-of-control of the tools that is the problem - the problem is maintaining focus or controlling ourselves. I get pretty tired of people trying to say that a specific tool is too complicated or too detailed - that is a good thing - not being able to manage ourselves is the pivot point.

    • @BrianFunkMusic
      @BrianFunkMusic 4 дня назад

      That's true; we are really dealing with our minds. We can make better choices with more options. The problem is we get caught up in spending too much time making decisions. For me, the pull of simpler tools with less depth is that the decisions don't even need to be made. To refer to the restaurant metaphor in the video, I put much less mental energy into an order when there are 3 options. Give me 100 options and I will get closer to a meal I really want. The cost is I labor over the decision longer. In a restaurant, that's the only decision I need to make. But in music production, every little decision, of which there are thousands in every project, can't be labored over if we hope to get any work finished. So in those cases we have to rely on discipline and managing ourselves, as you said! Thanks for your thoughts!

    I record short riffs. Many of them. I listen to them. After a while I decide which one I like the best and finish it. After all I am the one who is going to listen to the same thing thousand times. I better enjoy it. I don't believe in motivation. If the riff moves you than you don't mind playing along with it. Most of the stuff I finished is just jamming along some loop. Once I have few melodies I start the more technical part of adding things like chords, drums, bass...Usually I don't go bananas with the aragement because I didn't see any prove that crazy complex aragement gets more appreciation. Maybe I am wrong but how many times I hear I need more parts in my music and than the same people go and listen to music that repeats the same loop for 6 minutes. I am not even talking about classical musicians who always think more is more. Unless you die writing that music isn't good enough.

  • @aspirativemusicproduction2135
    @aspirativemusicproduction2135 7 дней назад

    Committing to limitations is the concept I like. I started at the same time with few others putting out music on RUclips. They stuck to their generic music and have thousands more ears listening to their music. I have put out a lot of unique music you won't find anywhere. I see how every time I put out something that isn't conforming to expectation I lose ears. It's difficult enough to even get people to hear your creations but you have to put yourself in a very small box. I tried simple, complex, soft, loud. There is almost nothing I haven't tried and my prevailing feeling is that you have to stick to a stile and conform with expectations. Otherwise you won't have audience.

    • @BrianFunkMusic
      @BrianFunkMusic 6 дней назад

      It does kind of make sense to stick to something people can expect from us. And sometimes a surprise is welcome (look at Andre3000's flute album). It's a tough decision, but maybe the best thing to do is follow your heart. I'd hate to try to fit into some box to please others and have that not work out and go unnoticed too!

Find those troublesome files and see if you can drag them into the current Session. If they are .als files, they will have a triangle you can unfold and see the individual tracks. Try dragging those tracks in one by one. There might be a track that has some kind of problem with it. I hope that helps!

    It’s funny how guys from Gen X and the first millennials are starting to speak about this now. My first keyboard was an Ensoniq EPS classic. You had eight tracks of sampling/sequencer and two song tracks… That’s it. I witnessed guys make songs, complete songs, on that board and others like the ASR-10… even on the MPC 2000 XL. Hell, even on computers I saw guys make songs on Cool Edit Pro and even make tracks on that WITH SAMPLES before it had snapping and basic multitrack recording features. Then I saw guys using Audacity doing the same thing! I don’t give a shit what anyone says these days you are not being creative. Slapping things together is not the same as what we did because we had limitations.

    • @BrianFunkMusic
      @BrianFunkMusic 7 дней назад

      Well I guess we all come up using different gear and that certainly leaves an impression on us. I started with a 4-track cassette recorder and made songs with a mic and guitar and anything else I could find to fill the last two tracks. No samples at all. I don't particularly enjoy making songs by dragging samples together, but I still think there is room for creativity in that. It's just different. I think you're right, a lot of creativity comes from overcoming limitations. BTW that graphic novel on your channel looks pretty awesome!

    • @DarkGloComics
      @DarkGloComics 7 дней назад

      Dude…at least with playing a guitar you’re just doing one to two tracks! After my Ensoniq died I had a 4 track and a Casio. I had to record a metronome track with a drum sound off the Casio, then kick and snare tracks, make sure those were mixed well, then record those to the fourth track and do additive composing like that till I was finished. Sampling is more than dragging them together. There’s chopping, and multing. Multing is essentially recording the sample (back then) or the chopped up samples as they were then sequenced on an MPC etc and recording that sequence onto two inch reel as many times as there are instruments from the sample. Then, it’s basically creating stems for each of the instruments in the sample. Except there’s no app/AI at the time so you eq out the other instruments from each track until you get the hihat “by itself”, for example. Thank you for taking the time to look through my channel and your compliment on my book.

    • @BrianFunkMusic
      @BrianFunkMusic 6 дней назад

      @@DarkGloComics Ha! I know what you mean about building tracks that way. I used to try to do that but I couldn't actually play the keyboard drums well enough! I think those were creative times, but they also got in the way of bringing my ideas to life. I don't exactly miss that stuff! But sometimes incorporating some of those limitations (like track counts) can be a lot of fun and lead to interesting results. Yea the comics look awesome! Glad I took a look!

    "Right now is the best time to be making music"... And then SUNO came. Good times

      Your comment had me playing with SUNO for a little while. It's impressive, but I wouldn't want to listen to the music it makes and I didn't feel any pride in "creating" it. But it is certainly amusing. One can only imagine it will get better and better, and probably faster than we ever imagine!

      @@BrianFunkMusic Yep... For now it's just "impressive" right? What it will be 2..3 years from now nobody knows. It looks like Universal already signed with a music generation AI startup to create AI voice models of all its artists. Hard to believe but apparently it's real

      @@DarkCebolix Yikes! I could imagine where that's part of the record deal. I still like to believe that people will still appreciate human work. Cars go super fast, but we still watch people run races against each other. Maybe we will return to an appreciation of talent and emotional expression. 🤞 One thing it can't replicate is the enjoyment of actually making music out of nothing!

    Very good Brian. Although I think people like yourself with lots of experience and instinct can make things good on the fly, as you go, more than myself who say, will listen to a track in my truck then go back and tweak an overly wet reverb on an instrument otherwise it will drive you made every time you hear it.

    • @BrianFunkMusic
      @BrianFunkMusic 9 дней назад

      Nah that happens to me all the time! The longer I work on a track the more I scrutinize every little detail. But when I work fast, I am more accepting of whatever I happened to choose. The problem is there are no right answers. There are infinite possible paths you can take on just about every decision. The more I think about all those paths, the more likely I am to want to tweak it to see if the next move is better. It's always a battle!
